සරු ඵල දෙන පස රහිත ගොවිතැන

වර්තමානය වන විට ලොව පුරා නව තාක්‍ෂණයන් බිහි වෙමින්, වර්ධනය වෙමින් පවතී. ලෝක ජනගහනය වර්ධනයත් සමඟ කෘෂි විද්‍යාඥයන්  අඩු ඉඩ ප්‍රමාණයක, ජලය සංරක්ෂණය කර ගනිමින් බෝග වගා කිරීමේ නවීන ක්‍රම සොයනු ලැබේ. ඒ ආකාරයෙන් බෝග වගා කිරීම සඳහා ඵලදායි විකල්ප ක්‍රමවේදයක් ලෙස hydroponic වගාව භාවිතා කළ හැකිය.

Hydroponic වගාව යනු පස නොමැතිව, ඛනිජ පෝෂක ද්‍රාවණයක් භාවිතා කරමින් බෝග වගා කිරීමේ ක්‍රමයකි. Hydroponic යනු ලතින් භාෂාවෙහි එන වචනයක් වන අතර තේරුම "working water" යන්නයි. එනම්, පස නොමැතිව, ජලය මගින් බෝග සදහා අවශ්‍ය පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ, හයිඩ්‍රජන් සහ ඔක්සිජන් ශාකයට ලබා දීමයි. මෙම ක්‍රමය මඟින් ශාක වර්ධන වේගය වැඩි කරන අතර, වැඩි  අස්වැන්නක් සහිත උසස් ප්‍රමිතියෙන් යුත් කෘෂිකාර්මික නිෂ්පාදන ලබා දේ.

Hydroponic වගාව සහ සාම්ප්‍රදායික ගොවිතැන 

 Hydroponic වගාව සහ සාම්ප්‍රදායික ගොවිතැන ගැන සලකා බැලීමේදී යම් විශේෂිත වූ වෙනස්කම් පවතී.  ප්‍රධාන වෙනස නම් පස භාවිතයයි.  පාංශු ගොවිතැන ලෙස හැඳින්වෙන සාම්ප්‍රදායික ගොවිතැනට පස අවශ්‍ය වන අතර hydroponic වගාවට පස අවශ්‍ය නොවේ.  Hydroponic වගාවෙහි, ශාකයේ මුල් මුළුමනින්ම හෝ අර්ධ වශයෙන් සෘජුවම ජලය හා පෝෂක මිශ්‍රණයේ ගිලී පවතී. නමුත් පාංශු ගොවිතැනේදී ශාක සෘජුවම පසෙහි සිටවනු  ලැබේ.එහිදී ශාක මුල් වලට පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ ලබා දීමේ මූලික ක්‍රමය වන්නේ පසෙහි ඛනිජ පෝෂක යි.

තවද hydroponic පද්ධතියක ඇති පැළ සාමාන්‍යයෙන් වගා කරනු ලබන්නේ ගෘහස්ථව ය.  මෙවැනි පරිසරයක් තුළ ආලෝකය, උෂ්ණත්වය, pH සහ ආර්ද්‍රතාවය වැනි බාහිර සාධක බොහෝමයක් පාලනය කළ හැකිය.  නමුත් පාංශු/සාම්ප්‍රදායික ක්‍රමයෙහි ශාක එළිමහනේ සිටුවනු ලැබේ.  මෙම බෝග වගා කිරීමට ප්‍රමාණවත් පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ, ජලය, ආලෝකය සහ ඔක්සිජන් අවශ්‍ය වේ. සාධක පාලනය කළ නොහැකි වීම  හේතුවෙන් මෙම බෝග වල අස්වැන්න බෙහෙවින් වෙනස් විය හැකිය.  එම නිසා hydroponic ක්‍රමය මඟින් ලබා ගන්නා අස්වැන්න සාම්ප්‍රදායික ගොවිතැනට වඩා ඉහළ ය.

දැන් අපි hydroponic පද්ධතියක ප්‍රධාන අංග සහ එහි ක්‍රියාවලිය සලකා බලමු.

Hydroponic පද්ධතියක ප්‍රධාන සංරචක සහ ඒවා ක්‍රියාත්මක වන්නේ කෙසේද? 

Hydroponic පද්ධතියක් පෝෂක ද්‍රාවණය, වැඩෙන මාධ්‍ය, air pump  සහ air stone, nutrient reservoir, වර්ධන තැටි/ දැල් බඳුන් සහ බෙදා හැරීමේ පද්ධතිය වැනි කොටස් කිහිපයකින් සමන්විත වේ.  ඒ සෑම කොටසකටම අදාල එක් එක් කාර්යයන් ඇත. මෙහිදී පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ වලින් බහුල ජලය පොම්ප කර ශාක වලට අවශ්‍ය දේ උරා ගැනීමට සලස්වයි.  මෙම පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ බහුල ජලය (පෝෂක ද්‍රාවණය) නැවත නැවතත් පොම්ප කරමින් පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ සියල්ලම පාහේ ශාක මඟින් අවශෝෂණය කර ගැනීමෙන් පසුව බැහැර කෙරේ. මෙම කාලය තුළ air pump මඟින් මුල් සඳහා ඔක්සිජන් සපයනු ලබයි. මනා ලෙස සකසා ගත් සහ පාලනය කරන ලද මෙම පරිසර තත්ත්ව වල ප්‍රතිඵලයක් වශයෙන් ශාක කිසිදු බාධාවකින් තොරව වේගයෙන් වර්ධනය වීම සිදු වේ. 

 Hydroponic සඳහා පස භාවිතා නොකරන බැවින්, ශාක සඳහා ආධාරකයක් ලෙස අතිරේක උපස්ථරයක් අවශ්‍ය වේ.  ශාක වල වර්ධනය සඳහා අවශ්‍ය තෙතමනය, වාතය සහ පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ උපස්තර ද්‍රව්‍ය මගින් රඳවා ගනී.  පොල් කෙඳි, pea gravel, වැලි, sawdust, peat moss සහ vermiculite වැනි ස්වාභාවික ද්‍රව්‍ය උපස්තර ලෙස භාවිතා කළ හැකිය.  එසේම rockwool, clay pallets ආදියද භාවිතා කළ හැක.  අනෙක් ප්‍රධාන අංගය නම් පෝෂක ද්‍රාවණයයි.  ශාක වලට අවශ්‍ය සියළුම අත්‍යවශ්‍ය ක්ෂුද්‍ර හා මහා පෝෂක රඳවා තබා ගැනීම එහි කාර්යය වේ.  ජලයට ඔක්සිජන් බහුල වාතය ලබා දීම සඳහා air pump සහ air stone භාවිතා කෙරේ.  පැළ සහ වැඩෙන මාධ්‍ය රඳවා තැබීම සඳහා දැල් බඳුන්/ වර්ධන තැටි භාවිතා කෙරේ. Nutrient reservoir ශාක වලට පෝෂක ද්‍රාවණය ලබා දීමට පෙර ද්‍රාවණය තැන්පත් කර තබා ගනියි.  පෝෂක ද්‍රව්‍ය වර්ධන තැටිය වෙත ගෙන යාම සඳහා බෙදා හැරීමේ පද්ධතිය අවශ්‍ය වේ.

තවත් වැදගත්ම කරුණක් නම් hydroponic පද්ධතිය තුළ භාවිතා කරන මෙම සියලුම ද්‍රව්‍ය සහ අනෙකුත් උපකරණ හොඳින් පිරිසිදු කර/ ජීවානුහරණය කළ යුතු වීමයි.

Hydroponic පද්ධතියක් සඳහා වන අනෙකුත් අවශ්‍යතා 

ශාකයේ වර්ධනය සඳහා වැදගත් වන උෂ්ණත්වය, pH අගය, ආලෝකය යන තත්ව පාලනය කරමින් සහ ශාකය පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ වලට හා ජලයට උපරිම ලෙස නිරාවරණය කිරීමට ඉඩ ලබා දෙමින් hydroponic පද්ධති ක්‍රියා කරයි.

ශාක වල පරිවෘත්තීය ක්‍රියාකාරකම් සඳහා අවශ්‍ය වන තෙතමනය සපයනු ලබන්නේ ජලය මඟිනි. එබැවින් එය ශාක වර්ධනය සඳහා අත්‍යාවශ්‍ය අංගයකි. මෙම ජලය ඔක්සිජන් සහ පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ වලින් බහුලය.  ලවණ අන්තර්ගතය, pH අගය සහ ක්ෂාරීයතාව යන සියල්ල ජලයේ වැදගත් ලක්‍ෂණ වේ.  විද්‍යුත් සන්නායකතාවය (EC) මැනීම මඟින් ජලයේ දිය වී ඇති ඛනිජ වල අනුපාතය තීරණය කරනු ලබයි.  Hydroponic පද්ධති සඳහා හොඳම විකල්පය වන්නේ ප්‍රතිලෝම ආස්‍රැතිය(Reverse osmosis) මඟින් ලබාගන්නා ජලයයි.  මෙම පෙරීමේ ක්‍රියාවලිය මඟින් 98-99% ක් පිරිසිදු ජලය ලබාගත හැක.  ජලය පිරිසිදු වන තරමට ශාක පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ වල සමබරතාවය පවත්වා ගැනීම පහසු වේ.

ශාකයේ මූල පද්ධතියේ  pH අගය 6 ත් 6.5 ත් අතර පවත්වා ගැනීම සඳහා පෝෂක ද්‍රාවණ වල pH අගය 5 සිට 6 දක්වා (සාමාන්‍යයෙන් 5.5) තිබිය යුතුය. නමුත් භාවිතා කරන බෝගය අනුව එය වෙනස් විය හැකිය.

18 ° C සිට 25 ° C දක්වා වූ උෂ්ණත්ව පරාසය ශාක වර්ධනය සඳහා ඉතා යෝග්‍ය වෙයි. එසේ වුවද ශාක වර්ධනය මෙම උෂ්ණත්වයට පහළ හෝ ඉහළ අගයක වුවද සිදු විය හැක.  මෙම උෂ්ණත්වය ජලයෙහි සහ බාහිර පරිසරයෙහි යන දෙකෙහිම පවත්වා ගත යුතුය.

 ආලෝකයේ සම්පූර්ණ වර්ණාවලිය සූර්යාලෝකයෙන් සපයනු ලැබේ.  Hydroponic පද්ධතියක් ආලෝකනය කිරීමේ වඩාත් කාර්යක්ෂම ක්‍රමය එයයි.  බොහෝ එළවළු ශාක සඳහා දිනකට අවම වශයෙන් පැය 6 ක සෘජු හිරු එළිය අවශ්‍ය වේ.  මෙම හිරු එළිය හරිතාගාරය හරහා ලබා ගත හැකිය.  විකල්ප ක්‍රමයක් ලෙස වර්ධන විදුලි පහන් (grow lights) භාවිතා කළ හැකිය.  ඒ සඳහා උණුසුම් (රතු) සහ සිසිල් (නිල්) ආලෝකය නිපදවිය හැකි කෙල්වින් නිමැවුම 4000 සිට 6,000 දක්වා වූ බල්බ භාවිතා කරනු ලැබේ. මූලික වශයෙන් අපට hydroponic පද්ධති වර්ග 6 ක් හඳුනාගත හැකිය.  ඒවා නම්, Wick, Water Culture, Ebb and Flow (Flood & Drain), Drip (recovery or non-recovery), Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) සහ aeroponic පද්ධති වේ.

Hydroponic පද්ධතියක වගා කළ හැකි බෝග කවරේද?

 Hydroponic  පද්ධති විවිධ එළවළු සහ පලතුරු වගා කිරීමට භාවිතා කළ හැකිය.  නිවිති, ගෝවා සහ සලාද කොළ වැනි බෝග වගා කිරීමට එය යොදාගත හැක. එසේම බොහෝ පලා වර්ග වැවීමටද hydroponic පද්ධති භාවිතා කළ හැක. Hydroponic තත්වයන් තුළ, තක්කාලි, පිපිඤ්ඤා වැනි බෝගද, අර්තාපල් සහ රාබු වැනි බෝගද හොඳින් වගා කළ හැක. එමෙන්ම,   Hydroponic  පද්ධතියක ස්ට්‍රෝබෙරි වැනි කුඩා, අඩු බරැති පලතුරු පැල හොඳින් වැවිය හැකි වේ.  බැසිල්, පාස්ලි, රෝස්මරී, මින්ට් ඇතුළු බොහෝ ඖෂධ පැළෑටිද hydroponic පද්ධතියක් තුළ වගා කළ හැකිය.

Hydroponic වගාවේ ඇති වාසි සහ අවාසි මොනවාද?

Hydroponic තාක්‍ෂණයෙහි බොහෝ වාසි හඳුනාගත හැකිය.  වගා කිරීම සදහා සුදුසු පස් නොමැති ප්‍රදේශවල හෝ පසෙහි රෝග ආසාදනය වී ඇති විට මෙම ක්‍රමය මගින් පහසුවෙන් භෝග වගා කළ හැකිය.  පස සැකසීම, වගා කිරීම, ජලය දැමීම සහ සාම්ප්‍රදායික ගොවිතැනේ ඇති අනෙකුත් කාර්‍යන් සියල්ලටම සැලකිය යුතු ශ්‍රමයක් අවශ්‍ය වේ.  Hydroponic වගාව තුළින් ඒවා බොහෝ දුරට අවම කරගත හැකිය.  ජලය සහ පෝෂක සංරක්‍ෂණය සෑම වගාවකම වැදගත් අංගයකි.  රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය අපතේ යාමද අවම බැවින් මෙය භූමිය හා ජල මාර්ග දූෂණය වීම අඩු කිරීමට දායක වේ.  ජනාකීර්ණ එමෙන්ම මිල අධික භූමි ප්‍රදේශ වල මෙම පද්ධති පවත්වා ගෙන යාම ආර්ථික වශයෙන් ලාභදායි වේ.  Hydroponic වගාවේදි එම උපකරණ සහ පරිසරය පිරිසිදුව පවත්වා ගැනීම අත්‍යවශ්‍ය කරුණකි.  එම නිසා උසස් තත්ත්වයේ සහ ආරක්‍ෂිත නිෂ්පාදන ලබාගත හැකි වේ.  වර්ධන ක්‍රියාවලියේදී ආලෝකය, තාපය, පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ, පළිබෝධකයන් සහ අනෙකුත් සියලුම සාධක වගාව සිදුකරන ශිල්පීන් විසින් පාලනය කළ හැකිය.  එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් වශයෙන්, හොඳ අස්වැන්නක් සහිත වේගයෙන් වර්ධනය වන භෝග නිෂ්පාදන ලබාගත හැකිවේ.

Hydroponic වගාවේ අවාසි කිහිපයක්ද දැකිය හැක.  මෙම පද්ධතියක් ඉදිකිරීම හා පවත්වාගෙන යාම සඳහා පිරිවැය පාංශු ගොවිතැනේදීට වඩා වැඩිය.  එසේම බෝග වගාව, ශාකවල පෝෂණ අවශ්‍යතා සහ වර්ධනය අධීක්ෂණය කිරීමට පුහුණු පුද්ගලයින් අවශ්‍ය වේ. එමෙන්ම  hydroponic වගාවේදී විදුලිය අවශ්‍ය වේ.  වර්ධන විදුලි පහන්, ජල පොම්ප, වායු පවිත්‍රකාරක, විදුලි පංකා වැනි hydroponic පද්ධති වල බොහෝ අංගයන් විදුලි බලයෙන් ක්‍රියාත්මක වේ.

සාම්ප්‍රදායික බෝග නිෂ්පාදන ක්‍රම වලට වඩා මෙම තාක්‍ෂණය ඉතා ප්‍රායෝගික බවත් සැලකිය යුතු ප්‍රතිලාභ ලබා දෙන බවත් විවිධ රටවල්වල සිදුකර ඇති පර්යේෂණ වල ප්‍රතිඵල මගින් පෙන්නුම් කරයි.  Hydroponic වගා ක්‍රම මඟින් සාම්ප්‍රදායික ගොවිතැනට වඩා වසරකට 240 ගුණයක බෝග ප්‍රමාණයක් ලබා ගත හැකිය.  එසේම ජලය 98% කින් සහ ඉඩ ප්‍රමාණය 99%කින් ඉතිරි කරගත හැක.  එමෙන්ම මෙය ලෝකයේ ආහාර සුරක්ෂිතතාව තහවුරු කිරීමෙහිලා විශාල කාර්‍යභාරයක් ඉටුකර ගැනීමටද යොදාගත හැක.

Hydroponics : A bettee way of growing

Every day, new technologies emerge throughout the world. The agriculture industry is exploring innovative ways to produce less land and save water as the world population increases. Hydroponic farming can be used as a feasible alternative to cultivate crops.

Hydroponic farming is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water without soil, often called soilless farming. Hydroponics is a Latin word meaning "working water". In the absence of soil, water works providing nutrients, hydration and oxygen to plant life. This system promotes rapid growth of plants, stronger yields, and superior quality of agricultural produce.

Hydroponic vs. traditional farming

 When we consider hydroponic farming and traditional farming, there are some specific differences. The main difference is the usage of soil. Traditional farming, known as soil farming, requires soil, whereas hydroponic farming does not require soil. In hydroponics, the plants’ roots are either fully or partially immersed directly into the water and nutrient mixture. But in soil farming, plants are planted in the ground. The primary method of delivering nutrients to the roots is via mineral fertilizers/compost in the soil.

And also the plants in a hydroponic system are typically grown indoors. In this kind of environment, most external factors like lighting, temperature, pH and humidity can be controlled. But soil/traditional farms are planted outdoors. These crops need adequate nutrients, water, light and oxygen to grow. Yields of these crops can be highly variable as a result of uncontrollable factors. Therefore, the yield obtained by the hydroponic method is higher than traditional farming.

Now let’s consider the process and the main components of a hydroponic system.

Hydroponic growing system- main components and how they work?

A hydroponic system consists of multiple parts like nutrient solution, growing media, air pump and air stone, nutrient reservoir, grow tray/ net pots and delivery system. Each part has its own role.Here the plants are suspended in a pH neutral medium. Then nutrient rich water is pumped through allowing the plants to absorb what they need. This nutrient rich water (nutrient solution) is recycled, until the nutrients are nearly all absorbed by the plants and then disposed in a responsible way. An air pump oxygenates the water for the roots during this time period. As a result of this highly customized and controlled environment, plants are growing rapidly without any barriers.

Plants require an additional substrate for support because hydroponics does not utilize soil. Substrate materials retain moisture, air, and nutrients that plants require for growth and development. Natural materials such as coconut fiber, pea gravel, sand, sawdust, peat moss and vermiculite can be used as substrates. They can also be man-made materials like Rockwool or expanded clay pellets. The other main component is the nutrient solution. It is responsible for holding all the essential micro and macro nutrients required by plants. Air pump and air stone are used for delivering oxygen-rich air in the water. And net pots/ grow trays are used for holding the plants and the growing media. Nutrient reservoir is where the solution is placed before it is fed to the plants. Delivery system is responsible for moving the nutrient solution from the nutrient reservoir to the grow tray. 

Another important thing is all these components and other equipment that are used in the hydroponic system should be well cleaned/ sterilized.

Other requirements for a hydroponic system

Hydroponic systems work by allowing control of different conditions like temperature, pH balance, light and maximized exposure to nutrients and water which are important for growth and development of the plant.

 Water is a crucial component of plant development because it supplies moisture to the plant, which is required for metabolic activities. It also includes dissolved oxygen and carries nutrients. Salt content, pH value, and alkalinity are all important characteristics of water. Electrical conductivity (EC) is measured to determine the proportion of dissolved minerals. For hydroponic systems, reverse osmosis (RO) water is the best option. Water that is 98-99% pure is obtained using this filtration procedure. The purer the water, the easier it will be to maintain the proper balance of plant nutrients. 

Soilless culture nutrient solutions should have a pH of 5 to 6 (typically 5.5) to keep the pH in the root environment between 6 and 6.5. It can vary according to the crop that is grown. 

The temperature  range of 18 °C to 25 °C is ideal for growth, however growth can also occur below or above this temperature . This applies for both water and the ambient climate.

The complete spectrum of visible and non-visible light is provided by sunlight. It's the most efficient way to light hydroponics. Many vegetable plants need at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. This amount of sunlight may be obtained through southern-facing windows and greenhouses. As an optional method, grow lights can be used. Warm (red) and cool (blue) light may be produced by bulbs with a Kelvin output of 4,000 to 6,000. Mainly we can identify 6 basic types of hydroponic systems. They are, Wick, Water Culture, Ebb and Flow (Flood & Drain), Drip (recovery or non-recovery), Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) and aeroponic systems.

What can we grow in hydroponic systems?

Hydroponic systems can be used to cultivate a variety of vegetables and fruits. It enables to cultivate leafy vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, and lettuce. In fact, any leafy vegetable can be produced in a hydroponic system. In hydroponic conditions, vining plants like tomatoes and cucumbers, root crops like potatoes and radish can grow well. In a hydroponic system, smaller, lighter-weight fruiting plants, such as strawberries, perform well. Aeroponic method is widely used for cultivating fruits. Many herbs can be cultivated hydroponically including basil, parsley, rosemary, mint and dill.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of hydroponic farming?

Many advantages can be identified in the hydroponic technique. Crops can be cultivated in areas where there is no appropriate soil or when the soil is infested with diseases.Tilling, cultivating, fumigating, watering, and other conventional methods all require a significant amount of labor. They can be largely eliminated in hydroponic systems. Water and nutrient conservation is an important element of all systems. Because chemicals do not have to be wasted, this can contribute to a decrease in pollution of land and waterways. These systems are economically feasible in densely populated and expensive land areas. It is essential to maintain clean working areas in hydroponics. Therefore, are safe and high in quality. Light, heat, nutrients, hydration, pests, and all other factors of the growth process may be controlled by the grower. As a result, it may be optimized to produce larger, faster-growing plants with better yields and also they have absolute control over the climate. 

There are some disadvantages of hydroponic farming as well. The initial capital and expenditures for construction are higher than soil culture. The growth operation must be directed by trained people. It's necessary to understand how plants develop and nutritional requirements of plants. Power is required in hydroponic farming. Many components of hydroponics systems, such as grow lights, water pumps, aerators, fans, and so on, are all powered by electricity. 

Various countries have demonstrated the progress and results, that this technology is very practical and offers significant benefits over conventional crop production methods.  Hydroponic farming methods can produce 240 times more crops in a year than traditional farming. And it's all done with 98% less water and 99% less land. This overcomes a number of key issues in the world's food supply.

'Organic'  මේ දිනවල කතාබහට ලක් වන අපිට නිතර සවන් වැකෙන මාතෘකාවක්......... ඉතින් , 'organic fruits and vegetables' එහෙම නැත්නම් කාබනික නිෂ්පාදන, කාබනික  කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය  කියන්නේ මොකක්ද කියලා අපි බලමු.

'Organic' එහෙම නැතිනම් 'කාබනික' යන්නෙන් සරලව අදහස් කරන්නේ කෘෂිකාර්මික බෝග වගා කිරීම සහ සැකසීම සදහා යොදා ගනු ලබන ක්‍රමය යි. කාබනික කෘෂිකාර්මික ක්‍රම සහ පිළිවෙත්   භාවිතා කරමින් නිපදවන හා සැකසූ පලතුරු සහ එළවළු, 'කාබනික පලතුරු හා එළවළු' (organic fruits and vegetables) ලෙස සරලව  හැඳින්විය හැකිය .Organic fruits and vegetables  ගැන  තවදුරටත් දැනගන්න නම් අපි  මුලින්ම කාබනික කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය (organic agriculture) යනු කුමක්දැයි විමසා  බලමු .

"කාබනික කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය යනු  ජෛව විවිධත්වය, ජීව විද්‍යාත්මක චක්‍ර සහ පාංශු ජෛව විද්‍යාත්මක ක්‍රියාකාරකම් ඇතුළු කෘෂි පරිසර පද්ධතිය ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීමට  හා වැඩිදියුණු කිරීමට හැකි පරිපූර්ණ නිෂ්පාදන කළමනාකරණ පද්ධතියකි. මෙය සිදු කරනු ලබන්නේ කෘෂි පද්ධතිය තුළ කිසියම් නිශ්චිත කාර්යයක් ඉටු කිරීම සඳහා කෘතිම ද්‍රව්‍ය සහ ක්‍රම වලින් තොරව  කෘෂි විද්‍යාත්මක, ජීව විද්‍යාත්මක හා යාන්ත්‍රික ක්‍රම භාවිතා කිරීමෙනි" (FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission, 1999).

සරලව, කාබනික කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය යන්නෙන් අදහස් කරන්නේ  පරිසර හිතකාමී කෘෂි පද්ධතියක් වන අතර කෘතිම පොහොර, රසායනික පළිබෝධනාශක, වල් නාශක, හෝමෝන හෝ ජාන වෙනස් කරන ලද ජීවීන් (GMOs) යොදා ගැනීමෙන් තොරව සිදු කරනු ලබන ජෛව විද්‍යාත්මක ක්‍රම කළමනාකරණය කරමින් සිදු කරනු ලබන කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය යි. කාබනික ගොවිතැනේදී යොදා ගනු ලබන ක්‍රම සහ  භාවිතයන්, පසේ හා ජලයේ ගුණාත්මකභාවය වැඩි දියුණු කිරීමටත්, පාරිසරික දූෂණය අවම කිරීමටත් , ගොවිබිමෙහි සම්පත් ස්වයං තිරසාර වගා ක්‍රමයක් යටතේ වගාව ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීමටත් උපකාරී වේ. කාබනික ගොවිතැනේ දී, කෘතිම පොහොර භාවිතා නොකරන බැවින් පසෙහි පෝෂ්‍ය ගුණය වැඩි දියුණු කිරීම සඳහා ස්වාභාවික පොහොර හෝ කොම්පෝස්ට් භාවිතා කරනු ලැබේ.වඩාත්  වැදගත් දෙයක් වන්නේ, කාබනික කෘෂිකර්මාන්තයේ දී බෝග අස්වැන්න වැඩි දියුණු කිරීමට හෝ රෝග හෝ පළිබෝධකයන්ට එරෙහි ප්‍රතිරෝධය වැඩි කිරීමට ජෛව ඉංජිනේරු ජාන (bio engineered genes) භාවිතා කිරීමට අවසර නොමැති වීම යි. මේ අනුව, කාබනික ගොවිතැන සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම ජාන ඉංජිනේරු විද්‍යාවෙන්  තොරව සිදු විය යුතුය. එසේම, ආහාර කල් තබා ගැනීමට  හෝ පළිබෝධකයන් විනාශ  කිරීමට විකිරණ භාවිතා කිරීමට අවසර නොමැත. රසායනික පළිබෝධනාශක, සාම්ප්‍රදායිකව වගා කරන ලද (කාබනික නොවන) වාණිජ ගොවිපලවල භාවිතා කිරීමට අවසර ඇතත්, කාබනික ගොවිතැනෙහි දී රසායනික පළිබෝධනාශක භාවිතා කිරීමට හැකියාවක් නැත. එබැවින් පළිබෝධකයන් පාලනය කිරීම සඳහා ස්වාභාවික ක්‍රම ( විලෝපික කෘමීන් හෝ පක්ෂීන් හා කෘමි උගුල් වැනි) සහ ස්වාභාවිකවම ලබාගත් හෝ කාබනික අනුමත පළිබෝධනාශක භාවිතා කරනු ලැබේ. කාබනික ගොවිතැනෙහි දී වල් පැලෑටි පාලනය කිරීම සඳහා කාබනික අනුමත වල් නාශක හෝ ස්වාභාවික ක්‍රම (වල් නෙලීම, වසුන් යෙදීම වැනි )භාවිතා කරනු ලැබේ.

අද වන විට වෙළඳපොළේ කාබනික පලතුරු හා එළවළු සඳහා ඉල්ලුම වර්ධනය වෙමින් පවතී. සාම්ප්‍රදායික ගොවිපලවල භාවිතා කරන පළිබෝධනාශක හා වෙනත් රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය භාවිතා කර නිෂ්පාදනය කරනු ලබන එළවළු සහ පලතුරු දිගු කාලීනව ආහාරයට ගැනීමෙන් මිනිස් සිරුරට හානිකර තත්වයන්  ඇතිවීමට ඇති ඉඩකඩ වැඩි ය. එබැවින් වර්තමානයේ බොහෝ දෙනා පළිබෝධනාශක හා වෙනත් රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය නිසා ඇතිවිය හැකි  අවදානම වළක්වා ගැනීම සඳහා කාබනික ආහාර තෝරා ගැනීමට උත්සාහ කරති. කාබනික පලතුරු හා එළවළු වල  පෝෂණිය ගුණය සලකන විට, සමහර පර්යෙෂණ සාක්ෂි මගින් කාබනික ආහාර වල පැහැදිලි පෝෂණ අගයක් නොමැති බව පෙන්වා දෙන නමුත් මෑතකදී සිදු කල සමහර විද්‍යාත්මක පර්යෙෂණ, කාබනික ආහාර සාම්ප්‍රදායිකව වගා කරන කාබනික නොවන  ආහාර වලට වඩා පෝෂ්‍යදායී බව පෙන්වා දෙයි. British Journal of Nutrition(2014) හි ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කරන ලද, අධ්‍යයන 300 කට වැඩි සංඛ්‍යාවක දත්ත ද ඇතුළුව සිදු කරන ලද  සමාලෝචනයක් මගින්  නිගමනය කර ඇත්තේ කාබනික බෝග (කැරට් , බ්රොකොලි, ඇපල් හා බ්ලූබෙරීස් දක්වා) වල සැලකිය යුතු ඉහළ සාන්ද්‍රණයකින්  යුතු ප්‍රතිඔක්සිකාරක ගුණයකින් යුතු වන බවයි. තවත් පර්යේෂණයකින් ද (British Journal of Nutrition, led by Carlo Leifert) සාම්ප්‍රදායික බෝග හා සසඳන විට කාබනික ආහාරවල සැලකිය යුතු ඉහළ ප්‍රතිඔක්සිකාරක අඩංගු වන බව සොයාගෙන ඇත. නිදසුනක් ලෙස, සාම්ප්‍රදායික නිෂ්පාදන වලට වඩා කාබනික නිෂ්පාදනවල phenolic acids, flavanones and flavonols පිළිවෙලින්  19%, 69% සහ 50% වැනි ඉහළ අගයක් ගනී.

වෙළඳපොලේදී, කාබනික නිෂ්පාදන සහතික කිරීමේ ආයතනය සහ එයට අනුකූල වන ප්‍රමිතීන් මත 'කාබනික' (organic) ලෙස ලේබල් කර ඇත. නිෂ්පාදනයක් කාබනික යැයි සහතික කර ලේබල් කර ඇත්නම්, එහි නිෂ්පාදනය, ගබඩා කිරීම, සැකසීම සහ අලෙවිකරණය ආදී සියලු කටයුතු  නිවරදි තාක්ෂණික සහ  කාබනික අනුමත ක්‍රම වලට අනුකූලව නිෂ්පාදනය කරනු ලබයි. සහතික කරන ලද කාබනික පලතුරු හා එළවළු මිල සාම්ප්‍රදායිකව වගා කරන ලද කාබනික නොවන පලතුරු හා එළවළු වලට වඩා මිල අධිකය. සාමාන්‍යයෙන්, සහතික කළ කාබනික නිෂ්පාදන වල මිල , ඒවායේ සාම්ප්‍රදායිකව වගා කරනු ලැබු නිෂ්පාදනවලට වඩා 40-50%කින් පමණ මිල  ඉහළය. ඉල්ලුමට සාපේක්ෂව කාබනික බෝග අස්වැන්නේ  සීමිත සැපයුමක් ඇති බැවින් මෙම ඉහළ මිල තීරණය වේ. කාබනික ගොවිපලවල ශ්‍රම යෙදවුම්, හැසිරවීම්, වගා ක්‍රම හා නඩත්තුව සාම්ප්‍රදායික ඒවාට වඩා ඉහළ පිරිවැයකින්  යුතුවීම ද මීට හේතු වේ. උදාහරණයක් ලෙස කාබනික ගොවිතැනෙහි දී  පළිබෝධනාශක හෝ වල් නාශක භාවිතා කිරීම වෙනුවට ජෛව හෝ භෞතික පාලන ක්‍රම මගින් පළිබෝධකයන් හා වල් පැලෑටි පාලනය කළ යුතුය.කෙසේ නමුත්, කාබනික ගොවිතැනේ  ගැටලු සහ සීමාවන් නිසා මුළු ලෝක ජනගහනයටම ජීවත් වීමට අවශ්‍ය තරම් කාබනික ආහාර නිෂ්පාදනය කිරීම දුෂ්කර ය.එම නිසා ආහාර වෙළඳපොළ, කාබනික කෘෂිකර්මික නිෂ්පාදන සදහා පමණක් වෙන්නොවීමට හේතු වූ ගැටලු සහ සීමාවන් රාශියක් පවතී . කාබනික ගොවිතැනේ එක් ප්‍රධාන ගැටළුවක් වන්නේ ප්‍රමාණවත් යටිතල පහසුකම් නොමැතිකමයි. එබැවින් සාපේක්ෂව සීමිත කාබනික නිෂ්පාදනයක් සිදුවේ. අනෙක් ප්‍රධාන හේතුවක් වන්නේ රසායනික කල් තබා ගන්නා ද්‍රව්‍ය භාවිතා නොකිරීම නිසා සාම්ප්‍රදායික නිෂ්පාදනයට වඩා කාබනික නිෂ්පාදන තබා ගත හැකි කාලය කෙටි වීමයි. එම නිසා විශාල වශයෙන් කාබනික නිෂ්පාදන වෙළඳපොළට අනුගත වීම දුෂ්කර ය.තවද කාබනික පොහොර ප්‍රමාණවත් ලෙස ලබා ගත නොහැකි වීමත් කාබනික නිෂ්පාදන අලෙවිකරණය සහ බෙදා හැරීම නිසි ලෙස විධිමත් ව සිදු නොවීමත් මීට හේතුන් වේ.කෙසේ වෙතත්, දැන් ලෝකයේ බොහෝ රටවල් කාබනික කෘෂිකර්මාන්තයට පෙළඹීමට උත්සාහ කරමින් සිටී. වර්තමානය වන විට,  ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාව, ආර්ජන්ටිනාව සහ චීනය ලෝකයේ වඩාත්ම කාබනික කෘෂි වගාබිම් ඇති රටවල් වේ.

What are organic food in the market?

The term 'organic' refers the way of growing and processing of agricultural produce. Fruits and vegetables which are produced and processed, accomplishing organic agricultural practices, are referred to as organic fruits and vegetables.

"Organic agriculture is a holistic production management system which promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil biological activity. This is accomplished by using, where possible, agronomic, biological, and mechanical methods, as opposed to using synthetic materials, to fulfil any specific function within the system." (FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission, 1999).

Simply, organic agriculture is an eco friendly system which uses organic matter to grow crops and follow biological management practices, avoid using synthetic fertilizers, chemical pesticides or herbicides,  antibiotics, hormones or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).The practices used in organic farming help to promote the self sustaining cycle of resources in farm, by improving quality of soil and water, and reducing pollution. Synthetic fertilizers are not permitted in organic farming, therefore, organic matter, natural fertilizers (green manure or compost) are used to enhance the nutrients in the soil. Most importantly, bioengineered genes (GMOs) are not allowed to use in organic farming in order to improve crop yields or resistance against diseases or pests. Thus, organic farming should be completely free from genetic engineering. As well as, irradiation can not be used to preserve food or eliminate pests in organic agriculture. Although, chemical pesticides are allowed to use in conventionally grown (non-organic) commercial farms, organic farming is not permitted to use chemical pesticides. Therefore, natural methods (such as predatory insects or birds, and insect traps) and naturally derived or organic approved pesticides are used to control pests. As well as, to control weeds in the farm, organic approved herbicides or natural methods are used such as hand weeding, crop rotation or mulching etc.

By today, market for organic fruits and vegetables is growing up to the response of increasing demand for organic produce. Long term exposure of pesticides and other chemicals used in conventional farms may be harmful to the human body because, of the possible accumulation of pesticide residues in human bodies. Therefore, in the present, many people are trying to choose organic food rather than taking conventionally grown food, to avoid risk associated with pesticides and other chemicals. When it comes to the nutritional value of organic fruits and vegetables than non- organic, some evidences so far have suggested that there's no clear nutritional value in organic than conventionally grown, but recently some scientific literature conclude that organic foods have more nutrients than conventionally grown food. Some studies have shown that significant composition differences can be seen between organic and conventional crops for a range of nutritionally relevant compounds. A  review, including data from more than 300 studies, published in 2014, in the British Journal of Nutrition, concluded that organic crops (ranging from carrots and broccoli to apples and blueberries) have significantly high concentrations of a range of antioxidants and other potentially beneficial compounds. A research which was published in the British Journal of Nutrition, led by Carlo Leifert identified, as compared to conventional crops, organic food contains significantly higher levels of “nutritionally desirable” antioxidants. For instance, phenolic acids, flavanones and flavonols were 19%, 69% and 50% higher, respectively, in organic produce than in its conventional counterparts.

In the market, organic products can be identified through certification, labelled as organic on the product description or the packaging, the certification body and the standards with which it complies. If a product is certified as organic, it is produced, stored, processed, handled and marketed in accordance with technical specifications. Price of certified organic fruits and vegetables are more expensive than conventionally grown fruits and vegetables. On average, certified organic food costs 40-50% more than their conventionally grown products. This high cost is because of the limited supply as compared to the demand because of the organic crop yield is usually lower than conventionally grown crop yield. As well as,  production cost is higher in organic because labour input, handling, cultivation practices and maintenance in organic farms are typically greater than conventional. For an example, in organic agriculture, pests, weeds and diseases should be managed with biological or physical control methods instead of using pesticides or herbicides.

It is hard to produce enough organic food for whole world population to survive because of the limitations of organic farming. One of the major issues of organic agriculture is the poor infrastructure, because of that  it is difficult to accommodate large scale of organic production to the market. Therefore, organic production is limited as compared to the conventional production. Other reason is the shorter shelf life of organic products than conventional products, because of not using chemical preservatives. On the other hand, organic manure is not available sufficiently. Marketing and distribution of organic products is also not properly streamlined. As well as, food illnesses may occur more often. However, now most of the countries in world try to change into organic agriculture. At present, Australia, Argentina and China are the countries with the most organic agricultural lands in the world.

අපි බලමු මේ කෘෂි රසායනික(agrochemicals ) කියන්නේ මොනවද කියලා.කෘෂි රසායනික යනු කෘෂිකාර්මික අංශවල පරිසර පද්ධතිය කළමනාකරණය කිරීම සඳහා භාවිතා කරනු ලබන පළිබෝධනාශක , වල්නාශක හෝ පොහොර වේ. බෝග අස්වැන්න වැඩි දියුණු කිරීම සහ කෘෂිකාර්මික පළිබෝධකයන්ගේ ජනගහනය පාලනය කිරීම සඳහා කෘෂි රසායන භාවිතා කරනු ලබයි.මේ සඳහා කාබනික පොහොර වැනි දෑ යොදාගත හැකි වුවද එමගින් බෝග වලට අවශ්‍ය සියලු පෝෂක ලබාදිය නොහැකිය. එමනිසා ලබාගන්නා අස්වැන්නේ ප්‍රමාණය අඩුවේ.මෙම හේතූන් නිසා කාබනික පොහොර පමණක් ප්‍රමාණවත් නොවේ. වර්තමානය වන විට විවිධ වර්ගයේ කෘෂි රසායන භාවිතා කරනු ලබයි.

*පළිබෝධනාශක (pesticides )- වගාවන්ට හානිකරන කෘමීන්, අනෙකුත් ජීවීන්, විනාශ කිරීමට යොදා ගන්නා රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය වේ.

*කෘත්‍රීම පොහොර(synthetic fertilizers )- උදාහරණයක් ලෙස ඇමෝනියම් නයිට්‍රේට් (NH4NO3);බෝග වර්ධනය ඉහළ දැමීම සඳහා පස පෝෂක පදාර්ථ වලින් සංතෘප්ත කිරීමට යොදාගනී.

*ආම්ලිකකාරක සහ සීමාකාරී කාරක(Acidifiers & limiting agents)- බෝග වල රෝපණ ගුණාංග වලට සරිලන පරිදි පසෙහි pH අගය වෙනස් කිරීමට යොදාගනී.

*පාංශු සැකසුම් ද්‍රව්‍ය(Soil conditioners)- උදාහරණ ලෙස ජිප්සම්(CaSO4.2H2O); රෝපණ තත්ත්වයන් වැඩිදියුණු කිරීම සඳහා, පස ඉහළ සෝඩියම්(Na) අන්තර්ගතයක් සහිත තත්ත්වයට පත් කිරීම සිදුකරයි.

*වර්ධක හෝර්මෝන(Growth hormones ) හෝ කෘත්‍රීම රසායනික(synthetic chemicals)- සතුන් සහ බෝග වල වර්ධන වේගය වැඩි කිරීම සඳහා යොදාගනී.

කෘෂි රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය මූලික වශයෙන් භාවිතා කරනුයේ බෝගයේ අස්වැන්න වැඩිදියුණු කිරීම සඳහා වුවද, මෙම රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය අධික ලෙස භාවිතා කිරීම නිසා පරිසරයට විවිධ බලපෑම් එල්ල වී ඇත.මෙම රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය අධික ලෙස භාවිතා කිරීමෙන් පෝෂ්‍ය පදාර්ථ අසමතුලිතතාවයට හේතුවන අපද්‍රව්‍ය ජනනය වන අතර, බෝගවල ඵලදාව අඩුවේ. මෙම කෘෂි රසායනික අධික ලෙස භාවිතයෙන් පස,ජලය,වාතය මෙන්ම මිනිසාට ද අහිතකර බලපෑම් එල්ල වේ.

1.පසට ඇතිවිය හැකි බලපෑම්,

*ප්‍රයෝජනවත් බැක්ටීරියා විනාශ වේ.

*පසෙහි නයිට්‍රජන් ප්‍රමාණය ඉහළ දමයි.

*පසෙහි pH වෙනස් කරයි.

*පාංශු ජීවීන් විනාශ වීම.

*පසෙහි ගුණාත්මකභාවය අඩු කරයි.

2.ජලයට ඇතිවිය හැකි බලපෑම්,

*ජලය පරිභෝජනයට නුසුදුසු වීම.

*ඇල්ගී වල වර්ධනය ඉහළ දැමීම.

*අධික රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය හේතුවෙන් සුපෝෂණයට ලක්වේ.

*ජල දූෂණය හේතුවෙන් ජලජ සතුන්ට බලපෑම් ඇතිවේ.

3.වාතයට ඇතිවිය හැකි බලපෑම්,

*මෙම රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය වල අපද්‍රව්‍ය හා අංශු,වායු දූෂණයට හේතුවේ.

*දූෂිත වාතය ආශ්වාස කිරීම නිසා අවට ජීවීන්ගේ සෞඛ්‍යයට බලපෑම් ඇතිවේ.

4.මිනිසාට ඇතිවිය හැකි බලපෑම්,

*හෝර්මෝන ආබාධ(hormone disorder )- පලිබෝධනාශක මඟින් හෝර්මෝන වල ක්‍රියාකාරිත්වය වෙනස් කරයි.මෙහිදී රෝග ලක්ෂණ ලෙස තෙහෙට්ටුව, මානසික පීඩනය ඇතිවිය හැකිය.මෙම ආබාධයට ප්‍රධාන ලෙස DDT(Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane) පලිබෝධනාශකය බලපායි.

*පිළිකා අවධානම- බොහෝමයක් කෘෂි රසායනික පිළිකාකාරක වේ.දිගුකාලීනව කෘෂි රසායනික වලට නිරාවරණය වීමෙන් ලියුකේමියාව,ලිම්ෆෝමා,මොළය,වකුගඩු,පියයුරු,අග්න්‍යාශය,අක්මාව, පෙනහළු,පුරස්ථි ග්‍රන්ථිය සහ සමේ පිළිකා ඇතිවිය හැකිය. පිළිකාකාරක පලිබෝධනාශක ලෙස ඇල්ඩ්‍රීන් සහ DDT හැඳින්විය හැකිය.

*ශ්වසන ආබාධ- කෘෂි රසායනික සඳහා දිගුකාලීනව නිරාවරණය වනවාට සාපේක්ෂව කෙටිකාලීනව නිරාවරණය වනවිට ශ්වසන රෝග ලක්ෂණ සැලකිය යුතු ලෙස වැඩිවේ.පෙනහළු වලට බලපාන පලිබෝධනාශකයකට උදාහරණයක් ලෙස ක්ලෝඩේන් හැඳින්විය හැකිය.

*හෘද රෝග- ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් SO2 සහ NOx වලට නිරාවරණය වීමෙන් බලපෑම් ඇතිවිය හැකිය.

කෘෂි රසායනික, බෝග සඳහා යොදා ගැනීමේදී බෝගයෙන් බෝගයට සපයන ප්‍රමාණය වෙනස් වේ.එමෙන්ම රසායනික භාවිතා කිරීම සහ අස්වනු නෙළා ගැනීම අතර අවම වශයෙන් සති 2ක කාල පරාසයක්වත් තිබිය යුතුය.වර්තමානය තුළ කුඩා ළමයාගේ සිට වැඩිහිටියා දක්වා සියලුම දෙනා දැනුවත්ව සිටිනුයේ කෘෂි රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය අහිතකර යැයි කියාය. නමුත් අප සියලු දෙනා නොදන්නා කරුණ වනුයේ මෙම රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය අහිතකර බලපෑම් ඇතිකරනුයේ අනුමත ප්‍රමාණයන්ගෙන් සහ නියමිත ප්‍රමිතියකින් තොරව භාවිතා කිරීම නිසා යන්නයි.අනුමත ප්‍රමාණයන්ගෙන් යනුවෙන් අදහස් වනුයේ ඒ ඒ කෘෂි රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය බෝගයන් සඳහා යෙදිය යුතු ප්‍රමාණයන්‍ ය. සියලු කෘෂි රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍යයන්හි ඇසුරුම් වල බෝගයන් සඳහා යෙදිය යුතු ප්‍රමාණයන් ඇතුලත් කර ඇත.මෙම අනුමත ප්‍රමාණය තීරණය කරනුයේ පරිසර පද්ධතියට වන බලපෑම අවම වන පරිදිය.නමුත් වර්තමාන ගොවියා තමාගේ අස්වැන්න වැඩි කරගැනීමේ පරමාර්ථයෙන් ප්‍රමාණය ඉක්මවා මෙම ද්‍රව්‍ය බෝග සඳහා යොදනු ලබයි.මෙමඟින් සිදුවන බලපෑම අවම කරගැනීම සඳහා රජයක් වශයෙන් ගොවීන් දැනුවත් කිරීමේ ක්‍රියාමාර්ග ගත යුතුය. එමෙන්ම රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය යෙදීමේදී එම පුද්ගලයා ආරක්ෂක ක්‍රමෝපායයන් (මුඛ ආවරණ ,අත් ආවරණ )භාවිතා කළ යුතුය.එමඟින් ශරීරයට සිදුවන බලපෑම් අවම කරගත හැකිය.එමෙන්ම ඒ ඒ අවශ්‍යතාවයට ගැලපෙන කෘෂි රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය භාවිතා කිරීමද කළ යුතුය.නැතහොත් හිතකර පාංශු ජීවීන් විනාශ විය හැකිය.ඉහත සඳහන් අහිතකර බලපෑම් අවම කර ගැනීමට ක්‍රමවත්ව අපද්‍රව්‍ය බැහැර කිරීම ද සිදුකළ යුතුය.කෘෂි රසායනික ද්‍රව්‍ය බහාලූ බෝතල්,ඇසුරුම් වැනි අපද්‍රව්‍ය ජලජ පරිසර වලට මුදාහැරීම නොකල යුතුය.මෙම ක්‍රියාමාර්ග අනුගමනය කරමින් ක්‍රමවත්ව කෘෂි රසායනික භාවිතා කර පරිසරයට හානියක් නොවන පරිදි තම බෝග වගාවන් පවත්වා ගැනීම සියලු ගොවීන්ගේ අභිප්‍රාය විය යුතුය.

Are agrochemicals harmful?

Scarcity of food was one of the main issues among people back in 1900's. Green revolution arose up as the solution for this. Green revolution targets to produce a huge yield from a small area of lands. Sri Lankan farmers also used to practice this and as a result, Sri Lankan farmers were moved away from farming using organic fertilizers. They started to apply several chemical fertilizers. With the time, farmers got attracted more towards the applying of these chemical fertilizers, since it helped farmers to produce a huge yield from a small area of lands.

Let's see what these agrochemicals are. Agrochemicals are pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers used for the management of ecosystems in agricultural sector. Agrochemicals are used to improve crop yields and control the population of agricultural pests. Although organic fertilizers can be used for this purpose it does not provide all the nutrients required by the crops. Therefore, the yield obtained is less. Due to these reasons, only organic fertilizers are not sufficient. Now a days various types of agrochemicals are used.

*Pesticides: Chemicals used to destroy insects and other organisms that could damage crop yield.

*Synthetic fertilizers: for example ammonium nitrate(NH4NO3), which is used to encourage crop growth by saturating soil with nutrients.

*Acidifiers and Limiting agents: Used to alter the pH levels of soils to suit the planting properties of given crops.

*Soil conditioners: for example gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O), which is used to condition soils with high sodium(Na) content to improve planting conditions.

*Growth hormones or Synthetic chemicals: designed to increase growth rates of animals and crop.

Although agrochemicals are primarily used to improve crop yields, over-use of these chemicals can cause various effects on the environment. Excessive use of this chemicals produce compounds that cause nutrient imbalance, and reduce the productivity of crops. Excessive use of these agrochemicals can adversely affect soil, water, air as well as human.

1.Possible effects on the soil,

*May kill beneficial bacteria.

*Increase nitrate level in soil.

*Alter the pH of soil.

*Kill soil organisms.

*Reduction in soil quality.

2.Possible effects on water,

*Water becomes unfit for consumption.

*Can promote the growth of algae.

*Leads to eutrophication due to excessive chemicals.

*Affect aquatic animals due to water pollution.

3.Possible effects on air

*Residues and particles of these chemicals can lead to air pollution.

*Affect the health of the surrounding organisms due to inhalation of polluted air.

4.Possible effects on human,

*Hormone disorder- Pesticides alter the activity of hormones. The symptoms can be seen as fatigue and even depression. The main suspect of pesticide that causes this disorder is DDT(Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane).

*Cancer risk- Most of agrochemicals are carcinogens in a certain way. Leukemia, lymphoma, brain, kidney, breast, pancreas, liver, lungs, prostate glands and skin cancer are the cancers that occurs due to prolonged exposure to chemicals. Aldrin and DDT are considered as probable carcinogenic pesticides .

*Respiratory problems- The respiratory symptoms are significantly higher in the short-term exposure compared to long-term exposure. Chlordane can be taken as an example for a pesticide that affects lungs.

*Cardiovascular illness- Mainly caused by the exposure to SO2 and NOx.

*Liver disease- Human liver metabolizes the chemical compounds that enter into the human body. This mechanism also works with pesticide.

When applying agrochemicals, the amount that should be applied vary from crop to crop. And also there should be a time gap of at least 2 weeks between the application of the chemical and harvesting. Nowadays, everyone think that agrochemicals are harmful. But we should know, that these chemicals are only harmful, if not used in approved quantities as prescribed. Approved quantities mean the amount of agrochemicals to be applied to each crop. The quantities are included in the package of all agrochemicals. This approved amount is determined to minimize the impact on the ecosystem. But the present farmers use excessive amount of chemicals to increase their yield. To minimize the impact of this, the government should take steps to increase awareness among farmers. Also, the farmers should take protective measures(masks, gloves) when applying the chemicals. This will reduce the effect on the body. Also farmers should select agrochemicals as per their needs. Otherwise favorable soil organisms may get destroyed. Systematic disposal of waste should also be done to minimize the adverse effects mentioned above. Contaminants such as bottles and packages of agrochemicals should not be released into the aquatic environment. Following above measures, all farmers should systematically use agrochemicals and maintain their crops without harming the environment.

Everyone involves in the aforementioned complex chain production, processing, transportation, storage and consumption is responsible for the quality and safety of food. That is why the World Health Organization (WHO) places food security as a shared responsibility. Today we bring you the first phase of the farm to fork food supply chain or the importance of food origin/ food production.

Agriculture is the origin of almost all of the food we consume and of the raw materials used to produce most of the food. Without it, our diet would not be complete. Agriculture is the basis for food such as bread, milk, meat, fruits, vegetables, and sugar as well as for food products such as cheese, cordials, chocolates, etc. Its contribution to food safety is not insignificant. The beginning of agriculture can be traced back to the time when man, who in the past met the food needs from the forest, gradually turned to domestic farming and animal husbandry. But today, agriculture has come a long way using various technologies and agricultural inputs. As a result, it feeds a large portion of the world's rapidly growing population. The main challenge is to provide an adequate supply of primary products that are manufactured in an environmentally friendly manner at an affordable price.

When selecting and growing plants for agriculture and raising animals, it is important to pay attention to their genetic potential, protection from other plants and predators, as well as threats from organisms such as fungi, bacteria and parasites. This is because such hazards can cause plants and animals to lose essential nutrients. This may have damaged the health of the plant or animal food, before it reaches the consumer. For example, considering the genetic potential of an apple, its size, color, taste, aroma and nutritional value should be included as the consumer expects. To meet these needs, the apple plant must be provided with the necessary nutrients to protect the tree and fruit from diseases and pests and as a result of this care and attention of the farmer, can provide the kind of hygienic product that the consumer expects. In this way, the food produced by the farmer in a safe and standardized manner can be delivered to the next step in the food supply chain. In any case, if there is any harm to the food safety associated with the farm, it will also move forward along the chain. Eventually a poor quality food gets into the hands of the consumer.

The quality and safety of these primary products must be taken into consideration. This is because consuming certain food that we buy, can lead to illness or even death. Also, the food industry buys unprocessed food/ fresh produce/ primary produce from farms or plantations for their raw materials. In such cases, it is detrimental to the industry as the raw material has to be disposed in large quantities as it is not suitable for the production process. Also, farmers and farm owners may be inconvenienced by not being able to sell their hard-earned produce. That is why the quality and safety of fresh produce is very important. The market demand for high quality and safety foods is high and good agricultural practices / GAP are very important for such production. This prevents contamination of primary products by microorganisms such as _Salmonella_ , _Listeria_ , pathogenic E.coli and viruses that can enter human, animal, soil and water sources. It includes special steps to harvest before and after planting to obtain a quality, safe and fresh produce. The end result is that, being able to deliver a product that satisfies the consumers as well as the middlemen in the food chain.
